Swollen Uvula. Heavy snorer.

Occasionally ill beat up pretty bad with snoring in my sleep and when i wake up its swollen. Any suggestions? lol

I'd first ask you if you notice that it happens certain times. (e.g., when you go out drinking all night the night before)

Do you drink, do you smoke?

There are a few things to think of, but I need more of a history from you before I can really give you an answer.

Since
you are in the military, I'll guess it's not drug related. If you
weren't I'd say "Edema of the uvula together with bronchitis, asthma,
and rhinopharyngitis, suggests inhalational injury, often from
recreational drug use (e.g., recent heavy smoking of marijuana, crack
cocaine, hashish)."

In your case though, it can also be
idiopathic or associated with drugs such as NSAIDs (ibuprofen, asprin)
or ACE inhibitors (heart drugs). If it is an isolated finding, and
symptoms are uncomfortable to you, dexamethasone, 4 mg, can help.

so pretty much no cure. lol i smoke a pack a day and drink quite often. but it is few and far between. The times it has gotten swollen though its extended in length almost an inch ide say.

The smoking is probably the main problem. (I used to smoke for 10 years.)

The drinking is probably related too. What happens is you drink and smoke all night and it irritates your uvula, then you go home and pass out. When you sleep your brain secretes a chemical that paralyzes your muscles. When the muscles in your mouth relax, your uvula forms a seal over the back of your throat, and you "beat it up" snoring. The initial swelling if from smoking and being dehydrated from the alcohol. Then the repeated trauma of snoring all night is what makes it swell up so big.

The cure is to eat ice cream the next morning. It will rehydrate and sooth your uvula.
